MOVING WITH THE FAMILY

Home / Moving Tips /Moving With The Family
Moving is a huge life event. Be sure to treat it that way. Whether moving out of state, out of town, or just to a different neighborhood, moving can be complicated and stressful. Imagine children who must leave their familiar surroundings; school, playground, friends, and even their own castle… their room! Before your kids make you regret the idea of moving, here are some tips and tricks to assist you help your kids.
Prepare your children for the move
Tell your children about the move as soon as possible. You may think you are doing your children a favor by hiding the move. However, your children need just as much time, if not more, to adjust to the idea of moving. Kids need help processing and accepting the changes. Try to answer their questions and be as detailed as possible.
Share with your children why and where you are moving. Once your child knows the reason for the relocation, it is easier for them to accept. Be honest. “Since grandma got sick, grandpa needs our help, so we are moving closer to them” or “Mommy got a new job, so we are moving to be closer to the new office.”
Welcome your children’s questions. Provide them with all the information they want or need about the new location. Always give the most accurate and honest answers you can.
Use maps and pictures. Show your children on the map the new state, town, or neighborhood where you are moving. If possible, have pictures of the new home and surrounding area.
Reassure your children that their life will not dramatically change. Let your children know their daily routines will stay the same. For example, nap time, bedtime stories, eating their cereal in their favorite bowl, classes, and their favorite activities (i.e., gymnastics, soccer, and even boy/girl scouts) will not change.
Encourage your children to create an address book. Make a list with your child that contains their best friends, close neighbors, a teacher, or a coach with whom they would like to stay in touch. Make sure to write their address, phone number, and e-mail address.
Give your children the layout of their room. Let your child have a plan for their new bedroom and let them take part in decorating it. They will most likely be more excited about the move than you anticipated.
Help your children plan their goodbyes. Saying goodbye is an important stage when moving. Whether it is a big party for their acquaintances or a small gathering, accommodate their wishes as much as possible within reason.
Make time to visit your children’s favorite places. Whether it is the park near your home or their favorite pizza or ice cream place, make an effort to go to those places for the last time. If the list is too long, choose their three top places.
Ask your children to help with the packing of their room.
