GARAGE SALE

Home / Moving Tips / Garage Sale
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Reorganizing your house? Moving? Whatever the reason, a garage sale is a wonderful way to convert your knickknacks into cash. For your convenience, we put together some tips to help you have in a successful garage sale.
Getting Started
Go through your home, attic, garage, and basement, and collect items that are no longer in use.

If you haven’t used the item in over three years, sell it!

Check your association/complex office or any other authority for restrictions regarding a yard sale/garage sale

Keep in mind that some authorities restrict placing signs.

Advertise! Advertise! Advertise!

Advertise your garage sale online, in the local newspaper, on bulletin boards, and around your neighborhood. Promote it with everybody you can,

Watch out for the holidays!

Pick a date, avoiding holidays and weekends. Many people travel during those times and you may have less interest.

Make sure you have enough parking spots available for the buyers.

If you don’t, talk to your neighbors to see if they can help.

Decide on a time frame ahead of time (i.e., 9 AM to 3 PM)
Remember to include the hours on any ads and promotions.
What To Sell
  • Appliances (large or small)
  • Books
  • Baby and child toys, furniture, and clothes. Make sure to confirm items are in good condition. If you have even a slight concern that items are not 100% safe, it is better to discard them. Better safe than sorry!
  • Cooking and all kitchen items.
  • Jars and bottles
  • CDs, DVDs, videos, etc.
  • Clothes
  • Music Instruments
  • Furniture (i.e., couches, tables, chairs, desks, cabinets, etc.)
  • Exercise and sports equipment
  • Gardening tools and patio furniture
  • Mirrors and lamps
  • Toys, games, bicycle, etc.
  • Plants (most moving companies will not move live plants).
Doing It Right
  • Make sure the clothes you sell are stain-free and hang them neatly on a rack (set them up by sizes).
  • Set up similar items on the same display table or shelf (dishes with dishes, books with books, etc.).
  • If possible, have an extension cord available for consumers who want to test appliances or electronic items.
  • Place all CDs, books, and DVDs in a box with the title facing up for easy looking.
  • Even if your dog is friendly, leave him indoors.
  • Music makes shoppers more relaxed.
  • If you have your sale on a hot day, consider providing cold beverages for the consumer to buy. You can offer your kids, or the neighbors’ kids, to set up a lemonade stand (they may make few dollars, and it will keep them occupied).
  • Have a measuring tape in case a consumer would like to measure furniture.
  • Make items look attractive to the consumers (dust them, iron them, etc.).
  • Place items that are not for sale in a safe place.
  • If possible, have a person or two with you on the sale day (to answer questions, keep thieves away, etc.)
  • Keep the house doors closed while the sale is in process.
  • Keep your cash on you at all times! Wear a fanny belt for loose change and keep large bills in your pocket.
  • Keep your display attractive; be sure to fill up the sold item’s empty spots.
  • Have plastic bags available to the buyers.
You did it! Congratulations! You successfully held your first garage sale! Consider donating whatever you don’t sell at the garage sale to non-profit groups like the Salvation Army, Red Cross, and Goodwill. You can also try to sell your goods on Craig’s List, EBay, Facebook, etc.
